Nov. 3 Declared International Speculative Poetry Day

The members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association have adopted November 3rd as International Speculative Poetry Day.

Lao American speculative poets include Krysada Panusith Phounsiri, winner of the 2016 Rhysling Award, Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay, Oscar-nominated director Thavisouk Phrasavath, Nor Sanavongsay, founder of Sahtu Press, and the president of the SFPA, Bryan Thao Worra. Hmong American speculative poets include Elgin Award-nominated Khaty Xiong and Rhysling Award-nominated Burlee Vang, Mai Der Vang, Maum May W Yaj, and Renee Ya.


The office of the Governor of Minnesota issued a proclamation recognizing the day. Members of the SFPA also observed the occasion by writing poems dedicated to the dog Laika, whose mission to space coincided with November 3, 60 years ago. SFPA Grandmaster Marge Simon was among the poets who contributed work as was Ann K. Schwader. Anglo-Burmese poet and scholar Dr. Suzie GeeForce also contributed art marking the occasion.
